Chapter Fourteen

Dad finished making the kitchen spotless, and Ava changed out of her sweats. At last she had everything under control, until her cell rang. It was Hal. He’d heard about the scarecrow and phoned to make sure she’d arrive on time for the day’s shoot. She thanked him for his concern as quickly as possible and hung up.

At nine-fifteen a.m. and twelve minutes behind schedule, she trotted to the garage with her laptop and purse slung over her shoulder. The sun climbed in the sky overhead. The brightness made a false promise of warmth. She wore her sensible kaki get-to-work pants with a cream, long-sleeved blouse underneath her trench coat and still shivered as the morning air nipped at her face. She’d left supper in the Crockpot, and had everything ready for today’s show.

In the driveway, she stopped with an uneasy feeling and surveyed the neighborhood. No signs of Mac staked out on their street today.

The front door opened, and Dad walked out onto the front steps and locked the entry.

She waited until he reached her. “I can drop by the shop after I check the furniture.”

“Don’t bother. You have a lot to do. Your Open House is next weekend.”

“It’s not a problem.” She stopped beside Veronica’s red Mini Cooper while he unlocked the car.

“Ava, I wondered if you’d do me a favor.” He concentrated on opening the door.

“Anything, Dad.”

“Will you take Veronica’s clothes down to the Women’s Shelter?”

“Sure.” She touched his arm to show her support.

The squeal of tires jerked her attention to the street. A pickup roared into their drive and spun to a screeching halt an inch away from Veronica’s vehicle. Jason King jumped out of the truck, leaving the door swinging open. “Who the hell are you to set the cops on my mother?” He stalked up to Ava, waving his arms wildly in the air.

“Huh?” She moved back. “I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I’m warning you,” he shrieked in her face. “Leave my mother alone.”

“Young man, don’t yell at my daughter.” Dad wedged himself between her and Jason. “My daughter hasn’t set anyone on your mother. You’ve misunderstood. But you are on private property, and if you refuse to vacate immediately, I’m calling the police.” He held out his palm. “Ava, hand me your phone.”

In her head, she shut her phone, dropped it on the coffee table and ran to shove her laptop into the bag. She kept her gaze on Jason while she leaned toward Dad’s ear to whisper. “I forgot it in the house.” She straightened. “I don’t know anything about any questions and your mother. You threatened the wrong person. You’d better go before the police arrive.” She raised her wristwatch and pointed at the time. “Neighborhood Watch will drive by any second, and they’ll report you.”

Dad shook his fist in Jason’s face. “Listen to my daughter. Get out.”

She glued her gaze on Jason, afraid to blink. With his short fuse, he could blow up and attack them at any minute.
